LITERACY: In Reading Workshop we continued our unit on Pattern Books. Students practiced strategies for solving tricky words. We spent more time on each page, looking for clues from the pictures and figuring out what would sound right. In Writing Workshop we continued our unit on Pattern Books. Students learned to plant clues for the reader in their pictures, write snap words quickly and correctly, and to incorporate “surprise endings” (change the pattern on the last page) into their books.
MATH: This week we continued our unit on Measurement. Students compared sets of objects within 10. We related the words more and less to length and practiced proving why numbers are more and less using the number line and matching 1-1 (and having leftovers).
SCIENCE: We learned about what our fish need to live. We observed our fish in their habitat and recorded our thinking in our Science Journals.
SOCIAL STUDIES: This week we have been reading about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his beliefs of love, peace, and kindness. Today we attended an assembly to learn about MLK and the concept of culture. We then discussed our own cultures (beliefs, food, music, clothing, language, customs, and more!) and made our own cultural portraits. 🙂
- For the upcoming district-wide day of service on MLK, Jr. Day, each BPS school has been asked to collect an item, either for inclusion in the DRAW (Disaster Relief at Work) buckets or in the Care bags for Brightmoor Initiative. Beverly’s collection is WASHCLOTHS for the Care bags. Our goal is 200 new washcloths. Please send in new washcloths through January 18. A collection bucket will be in the lobby. Thanks for your support!
